It Feels Amazing To Have A Degree

We asked B.A. in General Studies graduates to share their continuing education story, in hopes of inspiring others to pursue their college degree, and accomplish their dream of being a college graduate. Through the BGS adult degree program, students can take advantage of online classes as well as multiple locations throughout Illinois, offering adults the ability to continue working, and sharing responsibilities of family while they continue their education.

Here is what Lauren Raef had to say about her experience going back to school as an adult at Eastern Illinois University as part of the BGS program at the School of Continuing EducationRead her advice for adults considering returning to college, how she overcame fears and challenges so that she could proudly say she was a college graduate.

Why did you choose EIU BGS to continue your education and get your college degree as an adult?

I chose EIU BGS because I had been a traditional student at EIU 2 years before I enrolled in the BGS program and all my credits were transferable. Also I love EIU and always dreamed of getting my degree from EIU!

What was your favorite part of the BGS degree program?

That all my credits were transferable and I was able to be a EIU student without having to commute or live in Charleston

What has been your biggest struggle for you returning to school as an adult?

Writing papers and completing homework. I suffer from sever paper writing anxiety to the point I would do my assignment and fail the course.

What advice would you give to an adult thinking about going back to school to get their college degree?

Do it!!! No matter how hard it is it feels so AMAZING to say you have a degree and to be able to check off the Bachelor Degree box on a resume!

Do you have any advice for adults considering the BGS program?

You have to do it! And any time it gets difficult do NOT be afraid to ask! My one professor told me the best advice! Always turn something in instead of nothing at all! It's shows that there was an effort and you will get some credit instead of zero!

What are your plans for the future now that you have graduated?

Right now I am looking for a office position in customer service working Monday- Friday 8-5. With health benefits. Any job that I can support myself on and move out of my parents house!

Did you have a favorite class or instructor during your time at EIU B.A. in General Studies ?

I enjoyed my Leadership class with Jan. It was a topic where you had to really focus on yourself. It was different than any other class I had ever had. But overall all of the BGS professors are so nice and accommodating and just want to see their students succeed!

Can you share a memory or moment from when you enrolled in the BGS program and made the decision to get your degree?

I remember telling my boyfriend I was considering going back to school but was so scared to start over with the assignments and papers. He told me that I had to do it to feel better about myself and that I was an intelligent person that would succeed! Also he reminded me of my love of EIU and what it means to me and not to let all the work I had already done towards my degree go to waste! He said I had been dreaming graduating there and I had to achieve my dream!

We Are EIU - BGS Faculty

EIU B.A. in General Studies Faculty Members  We recently asked our professors to tell us a little bit about themselves, including what they enjoy about teaching at EIU and how teaching adults has impacted their teaching. We also wanted to spotlight some of the work and achievements that our faculty members have accomplished outside of EIU BGS .  We are very excited to share their stories and experience with our fans to showcase pride the faculty & students share in the School of Continuing Education at Eastern Illinois University and in the B.A. in General Studies program.  Dr. Teresa Britton teaches Philosophy at EIU-BGS  I like that BGS students attend (class); they are really smart students.  They are eager to learn and know how to have fun too. Teaching for EIU is great as I am part of a large and talented faculty connected to a larger professional world.  We are active and engaged scholars and researchers and it feels good to be part of an A team.

You're Going to Ask Yourself Why You Waited

Angela Masouridis graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 2016.    She  was chosen as the commencement speaker and delivered an inspiring speech about her experience at the graduation ceremony in front of her professors, peers and mentors.   Not only did Angela return to college as an adult, but also as a single mother. Her hard work, determination and courage earned her not just a degree, but more importantly a sense of pride.      Since her graduation Angela has enrolled in the graduate program at EIU and is continuing her education as an adult, and as a mother. She shared her EIU BGS experience with us in hopes of inspiring other adults who are considering returning to college.    Angela was able to take advantage of EIU BGS online degree courses , as well as the weekend courses at Harper College, and finish her degree through Eastern Illinois University adult degree program, inspiring her children, family and peers. Here is what she had to

Returning to College as an Adult Student

Get motivated & let the  staff in the  School of Continuing Education Eastern Illinois University   help you get started.  I recently saw the above quote posted on a friend’s Facebook page and immediately thought of the adult learners I work with at Eastern Illinois University. I direct the B. A. in General Studies degree, an adult degree-completion program offered at various locations in Illinois and online. New and prospective students often feel the need to explain why they did not complete their bachelor’s degree “when they should have” or at the “right time.” What does that mean exactly? Is there a “right time” to earn your college degree? I would argue that time is different for each of us. We speak of “traditional’ and “non-traditional” learners in higher education. What does that mean? At one time the typical college student was between 18-22 years of age.   Most students lived in residence halls where they were immersed in campus life. Today, more than 40% of
