Meet the Director of B.A. in General Studies

Carrie Johnson, Ed.D. 

Dr. Carrie Johnson has worked in higher education for over 30 years. Since 2011, she has directed the B.A. in General Studies, an adult degree program, at Eastern Illinois University. Since 2015, she has held the title of Director, B.A. in General Studies, Educational Attainment and Outreach. She previously held a faculty position in the Chicago area.

Dr. Johnson earned her Ed.D. in Adult and Higher Education from Northern Illinois University. She has presented several workshops for the Adult Higher Education Alliance, Council on Adult and Experiential Learning and the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education at their annual conferences. Dr. Johnson has spoken internationally on her research which focuses on adult accelerated courses, adjunct faculty development, teaching adults, and supporting underprepared adult learners in higher education. She has also published several journal articles and book chapters on these topics.


Dr. Johnson is a past-president of the Adult Higher Education Alliance, and currently serves on the membership committee for the Association for Continuing and Higher Education. In addition, she holds the position of Assistant Executive Director and Director of Membership Development for Alpha Sigma Lambda, the honors society for adult learners.

Returning to College As An Adult

EIU BGS Spring 2017 Events

B. A. in General Studies offers an adult degree program with many different options for adult students interested in earning their Liberal Arts Degree with Eastern Illinois University. Students applying to complete their college degree have the opportunity to do so through online courses or with EIU faculty at several locations including Parkland College, Harper College Professional Center, and our partner location in the Chicagoland area, Triton College. EIU BGS faculty also frequently visit community colleges across Illinois and offer informational table visits to help adult students take advantage of transfer and degree options that EIU has to offer through the School of Continuing Education.
